Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss is facing a huge political backlash after controversially scrapping a plan to tax top income earners in the UK.

It was announced as part of a package of tax cuts, just 10 days ago.

The move sparked turmoil on international markets.

Journalist and producer at LBC talk radio in London, Robbie Hawkins, said it was a massive humiliation for the government.

“Liz Truss was elected only a few weeks ago really on this big message that she wanted to be the low tax Prime Minister … which was very much a statement of intent from her and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng,” he told Neil Breen from London.

He said they were expected to announce big taxes on energy companies and additional support.

But it was the scrapping of the planned tax cuts for top income earners, that now won’t go ahead that has “really upset” people amidst a cost of living crisis.

“There’s a real feeling, even before the pound tanked, that things are in a bit of a decline.”
