Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says he fears little has been done to improve the alert system that “epically failed” Brisbane residents during the February flood disaster.

In a scathing statement today he said he’s deeply troubled the National Emergency Alert System, which is operated by the state government and coordinated by the federal government, is only being reviewed now.

With just weeks before the upcoming storm season, he said it needs to be fixed.

It comes after fresh warning from the Bureau of Meteorology that this year’s severe weather system looks likely to strike earlier, with the potential to bring tropical cyclones, flooding and low weather systems.

Cr Schrinner said in February, some text messages were received by residents 14 hours after local councils had intended for them to be sent.

“I am not blaming the state government, in fact I am not blaming anyone, this thing just needs to be fixed,” he said.

“We are looking up at the sky every day now, thinking what’s going to happen now, there’s a great level of concern out there.

“It’s not an early alert system if people are getting it 14 hours later.”
