Nearly 20 years on since the Bali bombings claimed the lives of 202 people, including 88 Australians, and injured dozens more, the horrors of that night live on for many survivors.

Brisbane woman Amanda Howard was in Bali for a trip with friends.

That night, she wasn’t feeling well, so she headed home while her friends went to the nightclub.

“Towards the end of dinner, I started to feel a bit queasy … and then the plan was to go to the Sari club afterwards,” she told Neil Breen.

They were staying at a villa in Seminyak.

Amanda and one friend were relaxing at the villa, when she said they felt what they thought was an earthquake.

“The windows in the villa shook.”

Her friend Jodie was critically injured in the bombings.

She passed away in hospital in Melbourne, 10 days later.

Amanda still thinks about that “sliding doors moment” and lives with survivors guilt.
