‘An insult’: Australia reverses recognition of West Jerusalem as capital
Foreign Minister Penny Wong has announced the government has reversed a decision to recognise West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, a move which has been labelled an insult to the Jewish community.
Instead, Tel Aviv will be recognised as the capital, a move which has been described as “hasty” by Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid.
The co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Alex Ryvchin, said to reverse the position of the Morrison government was an insult to the state of Israel and the Jewish community in Australia.
“The first reason [why Prime Minister Lapid is angry about the decision] I think is the process through which the decision was reached which was utterly shambolic, and to be honest, it was fairly dishonest,” he told Neil Breen.
