Hundreds of people have been rescued from NSW towns after a “wall of water” surged through regional towns.
More than 100 millimetres of rain was dumped on parts of the Central West in less than 12 hours, as Wyangala Dam spilled record amounts of water.
Helicopters and boats were used to carry out more than 150 rescues in the inundated town of Eugowra alone yesterday.
“That fell in the middle of the night, overnight Sunday into Monday morning, so plenty of people caught off-guard,” Jess Millward said on 4BC Breakfast.
Jess said a Queensland LifeFlight crew has joined the rescue efforts, saving 18 people, 12 dogs, two cats and a turtle from floodwaters.
Mark Hine: “Did the turtle need saving, though?”
Gary Clare: “The turtle could’ve looked after itself!”
Jess Millward: “Yeah, this is the discussion we were having in the newsroom: ‘Why are we saving the turtle? It can swim…'”
She said vision captured by the helicopter (see below) was breathtaking.
“It wasn’t just normal floodwater where you’re bobbing, you’re sort of sitting, you’ve got a bit of time,” she continued.
“It was raging, it was moving so fast it was like rapids. It was definitely an emergency situation.
“We saw three people hiding behind a water tank, one man clutching his dog, my heart just broke, clutching his dog, just treading water.”
