G20 Summit: How Albanese and Xi’s meeting meeting will play out
Anthony Albanese says he’s looking forward to constructive dialogue when he meets for a one-on-one talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the first Australian leader to do so in six years.
The discussions are due to happen this evening, Australian time, on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders Summit being held in Indonesia.
It will mark a significant breakthrough in diplomatic relations between Australia and China.
It’s understood restoring $20 billion in trade, mainly across the agricultural sector, will be on the agenda.
Nine News political reporter Fiona Willan is in Bali at the G20 Summit.
She said after the meeting, which will be mostly closed to the media, Mr Albanese will brief reporters on what was discussed.
“[Mr Albanese] has been pretty quiet over what he’s going to raise with him, there are some things you can certainly guess,” she said.
“One thing he has mentioned is that he is going to push the President on the trade sanctions that have been placed on Australian products, he is going to try and talk him into lifting those.”
