The father of swimming legend Ariarne Titmus has slammed the state’s swimming education program.

Drownings in Queensland increased by 15 per cent to 84 people last year. 15 were children aged between 5 and 14 years.

While swimming lessons are already compulsory in Queensland state primary schools, Steve Titmus says a certificate of swimming competence should be introduced.

“You can have a compulsory program but what is the implementation on that, what is the sign-off on that, what is the absenteeism from these particular lessons?” he told Bill McDonald.

“We’ve got to make sure if it is in the schools and is done as a mandatory process, as part of the curriculum, that it is actually done correctly.”
