A hiker has been rescued on the Gold Coast Hinterland after falling from a 10-metre cliff yesterday afternoon.

The man in his 60s was hiking through Binna Burra in Lamington National Park when he fell from the path, sparking an extensive, eight-hour search and rescue through dense bushland.

His was just one of a number of rescues at Queensland’s national parks in recent weeks.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services personnel have been kept incredibly busy this holiday season.

QFES Assistant Commissioner Andrew Short told Greg Cary a lot of the time, rescues happen when people are underprepared.

“I’m not talking about the experienced hikers and bushwalkers here, or climbers, because they, generally, are the ones who train and work hard on keeping their gear right, communicating with family and friends that they’re out there doing this,” he said on 4BC Summer Afternoons.

“I’m more concerned around the more social occasions, where people say, ‘Hey, let’s go do this hike on this weekend without really thinking it through’.”
