‘Out of control’: Why Noosa locals want to slow the flow of tourists

A handful of towns along the coast are urging their local councils to stymie the flow of tourists over the summer.

Seal Rocks on the Mid North Coast in NSW made headlines last month when it issued a warning to tourists, asking them not to come to town.

“Please consider exploring other parts of our region over the coming days,” a social media post by the MidCoast Council read.

“The amount of people in Seal Rocks is causing traffic and emergency access hazards. Council staff are currently out and about in the area, moving people on.”

Noosa residents say they’re currently grappling with similar issues of congestion but the issue hasn’t driven them quite as far as it has in Seal Rocks.

“The congestion is pretty out of control and we’re just trying to do what a lot of other destinations are doing,” Noosa local Rod Ritchie told Bill McDonald on 4BC Summer Mornings.

“We’re just trying to get a handle on it. We’ve got the problem of short-term accommodation, we’ve got the problem of overcrowding in hotspots.

“You fit maybe 10 or 12 people in one house and there’s no proper parking, the rubbish bins fill up each day, instead of each week.”

Mr Ritchie said short of building walls and gates around Noosa, he doubts asking out-of-towners not to visit will achieve much.
