Australia Day warning: Drowning risk doubles on public holidays, authorities say
Queenslanders are being urged to watch their alcohol consumption around waterways on Australia Day.
The Gold and Sunshine Coasts are likely to hit 31 degrees, and it will likely mean a busy day for life savers across the south-east.
Figures show drowning deaths increase on public holidays and long weekends, with the risk almost doubling.
CEO of Royal Life Saving Justin Carr says men are of particular concern.
“Drowning commonly across the year is much much higher in men, and it’s higher because men are commonly over-estimating their skills and abilities, and under-estimating the risks associated with swimming in rivers, lakes and dams or at unpatrolled beaches.”
He said many drowning deaths on public holidays involve alcohol, and often substantial alcohol, and occur in rivers, lakes, and dams.
