The state government hasn’t ruled out alcohol bans in Queensland cities, the Premier has revealed. 

The mayors of Townsville, Cairns and Mount Isa have written to Deputy Premier Steven Miles, asking him to enact a banned drinkers register, as seen in the Northern Territory.

“It’s their proposal, they need to state very clearly how they would implement it,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told the media this afternoon.

“From an outsider looking into it, I think they may have trouble bringing it in because it would mean tradies, families, mums and dads having to produce ID in those large cities to get alcohol.

“It would be very hard for them to administer that, I would think.”

Ms Palaszczuk said she and Dr Miles would be “happy to hear” the mayors’ proposals and how they would implement and fund the ideas.

Police Union president Ian Leavers earlier told Sofie a ban has some merit has a short-term solution.

“What I do know, where we have alcohol management plans in communities throughout Queensland, it works quite well.

“It’s one of those things I think we’ve seriously got to look at to curb this behaviour.

“Long-term, we need to look at other social issues on how we can go about it without having these other Draconian measures.”
