Antarctic sea ice shrinks to another record low, satellites show
Antarctic sea ice has shrunk to its lowest amount in 45 years of satellite record-keeping, likely a record low.
The continent’s sea ice fell to 1.79 million square kilometres on February 21, exceeding the previous record set in 2022 by 136,000.
Gary told Laurel & Mark he has firsthand experience witnessing the impact of Antarctica’s melting ice, having just recently completed an expedition.
“They said this is the first time this liner, and it’s been going for, like, 20 years, has ever been able to go here because normally, it’s too iced up,” he recalled.
“It was beautiful but then you start to think, ‘Why isn’t it iced up if it’s always been iced up for like, forever?’
