The Gold Coast lights at Yatala on the M1 look set to be removed.

In recent weeks, hoons have been using the sign as a meeting place to do burn-outs on the highway.

But the lights have long attracted criticism.

This week, Gold Coast City Council’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee have unanimously agreed that council should look at removing them.

The lights, which cost $2.1 million to build and install, were created for the 2019 Commonwealth Games and have long been the target of criticism.

Robina Councillor Hermann Vorster says the council has taken the first steps to remove them, at an estimated cost of $250,000.

“I think it has a lot to do with the location rather than the actual installation itself,” he told Neil Breen.
