Fears that a fifth wave of COVID could be on the way

Clinton Maynard

Australia is facing a COVID-19 resurgence, with a predicted fifth wave according to a prominent epidemiologist. In the past week, there were 38,226 reported cases seeing a rise in nearly every state and territory, including a 44% spike in Tasmania.

Although the current seven-day rolling average of 5,461 is significantly lower than the peak of 100,000 cases in January 2022, Professor Adrian Esterman from the University of South Australia warns of a new wave in South Australia, anticipating a doubling of infections within two weeks. He suggests that the entire country is entering the fifth wave, as cases have been increasing for three consecutive weeks.

Amidst this resurgence, Luke speaks with infectious diseases physician, Dr. Clay Golledge in Perth, to question whether this situation should be a cause for concern or if it aligns with the typical pattern of increased COVID-19, flu, and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) prevalence during the winter season due to higher indoor activities..
