Nissan’s 2nd generation X-Trail 4WD – Now up there with the best medium sized SUV’s
Behind the wheel of Nissan’s fourth generation X-Trail SUV – There’s six petrol models and two hybrids – I drove the ST-L 2WD five-seater, one level up from the entry ST model, and nicely equipped for $43,190, the seven-seat ST-L another $3,100. Like most mid-sized SUV’s prices have lifted on this fourth-generation model but with a tight market and supply improving you should be able to garner a sharper deal.
After a good mix of urban and country driving I found the new X-Trail a really good all-rounder – the non-turbo 2.5-litre engine offers a nice blend of performance although the CVT continuously variable transmission has a little too much slip for my liking but is helped by the ability to use the manual shift paddles. And three drive modes, Auto, Eco and Sport let you tap the performance elements of the engine. Best features, a well sized cabin with above average load space and a nice blend of materials and excellent fit and finish.
Good economy, 7.6 L/100km with a mix of driving although this model now need higher grade 95 premium fuel. This upgraded fourth generation model has lifted the X-Trail towards the best in mid-sized SUV’s. Dislikes, a space save spare wheel and the lack of height of height adjustment on the passenger seat.
