Whatever happened to Aussie lingo?
Luke speaks with Bernard Salt, Managing Director of The Demographics Group & columnist with The Australian, about the infiltration of the American term “bro” into Australian language, particularly among the youth.
This term, originating from African-American slang, has gained popularity in Australia and seems to be gradually replacing the traditional Australian term “mate”, says Mr Salt.
He sees this linguistic shift as indicative of broader social and cultural changes in Australia following the pandemic with our language increasingly reflecting the influence of cultural trends and international partnerships.
Mr Salt emphasises that while “mate” holds a central place in Australian language, the growing usage of “bro” might challenge its prominence, even though the iconic phrase “g’day, mate” might struggle to transform into “g’day, bro.”
