Nurses are turning down night shifts due to fear of harassment walking to their cars
A new survey has revealed that Queensland nurses have been ditching night shifts because of verbal, physical and sexual harassment when they are walking to and from their cars after hours.
The President of the Nurses Professional Association of Queensland, Kara Thomas, told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, “a lot of them are having to park a long way from the hospital and walk quite some distances in the dark where there is no CCTV cameras.”
“It’s very poor lighting, we’re in the midst of a crime crisis and they’re telling us stories about being threatened physically, verbally abused, nurses have been egged and run back into the hospital.”
There is an alleyway near Ipswich hospital that our members tell us has been dubbed ‘rape alley’,’ she said.
