‘That is a cop-out’: Future of fish farming in Tasmania remains uncertain
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has again failed to guarantee that an EPBC review decision on Macquarie Harbour would be made before the election, leaving an uncertain future for fish farming in Tasmania.
Last year, Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek cast doubt over the future of fish farming in the harbour following increased concerns from green groups for the welfare of the endangered Maugean skate.
Shadow Minister for the Environment, Fisheries and Forestry, Jono Duniam, told Dean Miller on 4BC Summer Breakfast, “There are nearly 500 jobs in Strahan alone, but once a negative decision is made concerning [fish farming] industry in Strahan, it will have an impact on 5,000 jobs across our state.”
“It’s pretty clear to me they’re going to abandon this industry and the workers in it,” Duniam continued.
