Despite being more connected than ever, loneliness is a growing epidemic, especially among young adults (18–22), with four in five reporting feeling lonely—ironically, the same group most active on social media.

Mental health professionals note a rising interest in AI chatbot companions. While Australian studies highlight concerns over reduced human interaction, users say AI offers support, advice, and imaginative engagement.

For many, AI companions are becoming a central part of their lives.
