Men fear judgement over mental health
Phil speaks with crisis intervention specialist Gary Fahey about the stigma men face when seeking mental health support. Fahey highlights the intense pressures men experience in work, relationships, and society, often leaving little room for vulnerability.
Many men hesitate to seek help due to societal expectations of strength, fearing judgment or misunderstanding. Compounding the issue is a shortage of mental health professionals in Australia—especially high-quality male counsellors.
“Men are conditioned to believe they must always be strong, leading many to suppress stress and anxiety until they reach a breaking point,” Fahey explains. When they do seek help, they often settle for whoever is available rather than the right fit.
