Sports broadcaster Darrell Eastlake has died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

The former Wide World of Sports star retired in 2005, after more than 40 years in radio and television.

He died at an aged care home on the Central Coast at the age of 75.

Ray Hadley paid tribute to the former Rugby League, motorsports and weightlifting commentator.

“He was larger than life in many respects. Darryl was the voice of State of Origin… always overstated.

“He was a really nice man, with a huge talent. A gentleman in every respect.

“A link to our youth disappears with the passing of people like Darrell Eastlake.”

Alan Jones broke the news on his program earlier in the morning.

“Darryl was a fixture on our TV screens and on radio for more than 40 years.

“Very sad, a lovely fellow. Remember the big booming voice.”

Chris Smith spoke to the voice of rugby league Ray ‘Rabbits’ Warren, who recalled the great life of his dear friend and colleague.

“He was just a lovely bloke. And he was instrumental in many ways in getting me back… into sports broadcasting.

“He opened the door for me to come in.”
