The father responsible for murdering his two children at a home in Sydney’s north-west has been found dead near the “horrific scene”.

Emergency services responded to reports of gunshots at a home in West Pennant Hills home just after 5pm yesterday.

They found a 15-year-old boy and 13-year-old dead in a bedroom at the scene.

Their 36-year-old mother arrived at the home shortly afterwards and was treated for shock by paramedics before being released into the care of friends.

An overnight manhunt led police to a home at Normanhurst, where the children’s father John Edwards was found deceased.

NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden has confirmed further details of the “heinous crime”.

Edwards had been separated from the children’s mother and been involved in several custody disputes over the past two years.

Police say he legally acquired two powerful handguns earlier this year before planning and carrying out the attack.

Afterwards, he returned to his home on Harris Road at Normanhurst and shot himself.
