Working holiday-makers will be allowed to stay in Australia longer and move around more freely, in a bid to fill work shortages on farms.

Rules for some visas are being relaxed, meaning backpackers will be able to triple the length of their stay if they do agricultural work.

The Prime Minister unveiled an overhaul of some visa rules, allowing thousands more backpackers into the country to pick fruit.

Mr Morrison says he’s listening to farmers’ concerns but maintains that despite the changes farmers should still look to locals first, to fill vacancies.

National Farmers Federation CEO Tony Maher tells Ross Greenwood it’s what farmers want.

“It’s a step in the right direction.

“We’re going to get more workers able to stay here for longer and to be able to work in those areas where farmers really need them.”
