Firefighters gain upper hand on bushfire near Rockhampton
Firefighters have gained the upper hand on one of the many bushfires burning across Queensland.
Thousands were forced to flee their properties near Rockhampton during catastrophic weather conditions yesterday.
Around 8000 people were told to evacuate from Gracemere, as a fast-moving fire moved towards the township from Stanwell.
About 200 people bunkered down at the Rockhampton Showground, while many more stayed with family and friends.
Overnight, aerial water bombing helped ease the fire threat, allowing residents to return.
There are still more than 105 bushfires burning across Queensland with weather conditions easing slightly.
Residents in two communities south of Mackay have been evacuated this morning.
The fires are so severe, a convoy of 25 vehicles has been sent from northern New South Wales to assist.
