Former Adelaide Catholic Archbishop Philip Wilson has had his criminal conviction for concealing child sex abuse quashed.

The 67-year-old was found guilty of the offence back in May before being sentenced to a maximum of 12 months in home detention.

The former Archbishop appeared in Newcastle District Court via video link on Thursday, appealing his conviction.

Wilson had been found guilty of concealing the repeated sexual abuse of two altar boys by paedophile priest Jim Fletcher in the 1970s.

The judge quashed that conviction, meaning Philip Wilson is now a free man.
