Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says Labor leader Bill Shorten “thinks he’s going to win the election”.

His comments come as Labor prepares to hold its national conference on the weekend.

Multiple topics are set to be raised, including policies relating to border protection and asylum seekers.

Many on the left wing of the party are calling for boat turnbacks to cease, potentially seeing a return of the people smuggling trade.

Mr Dutton tells Ray Hadley the Labor Party won’t change its policy before the election.

“The left won’t get their way, that’s the reality of the conference.”

But he says, “that’s what will happen if Bill Shorten is elected prime minister”.

“I think he’s just got an air of arrogance, he thinks he’s going to win the election.

“They’ll just bluff their way through, past the election.”
