The Countdown is on for the New Year with Brisbane’s celebrations ready to go.

More than 100,000 people are expected to flock to the CBD to see the city skyline light up with more than seven tonnes of fireworks.

Five barges placed between the Victoria and Goodwill bridges will launch the spectacular display, set to 2018’s most popular hits.

Family-friendly fireworks are scheduled for 8.30pm before the main event at midnight.

Skylighter Fireworks Managing Director Max Brunner says viewers are in for a spectacular show.

“It’s going to be bigger and better than ever.”

New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city will bring some road closures and traffic delays.

• Russell Street will be closed between Grey Street and South Bank Parklands.
• Stanley Street will be closed between Melbourne Street and access to the QPAC car park.
• Ernest Street will be closed between Grey Street and Little Stanley Street.

The closures will be in place until 2am on January 1.

The RSPCA is also reminding pet owners to be prepared for tonight’s fireworks.

Dogs have more acute hearing than humans and are often spooked by the loud noises.

Spokesperson Michael Beattie tells Chris Smith owners need to make sure they’re pets can’t escape if they’re frightened.
