The tools powering visits to the emergency ward

Hospital emergency departments across Australia are filled at weekends with Do It Yourselfers who do themselves harm with power tools.

A study looking at 10 years worth of admissions at two Brisbane emergency departments found the number of men aged 30 to 59 injured on the weekend was twice as high as those during the week.

The chief culprit was the grinder followed by power saws, welders and drills.

UQ research manager at the Princess Alexandra Hospital’s emergency department Dr Rob Eley tells Mark the problems is many DIYers don’t appreciate or understand the risks of power tools.
