Warren Mundine has revealed he is vying for one of two vacant Senate seats and has a message for his main rival, Jim Molan.

The Liberals parachuted Mundine into the NSW south coast seat of Gilmor­e at the last election, but he lost 53-47 to Labor.

The former Labor Party ­national president has been thrown a lifeline though, with two Senate seats opening up.

Arthur Sinodinos has been named as the next ambassador to Washington while Mitch Fifield will become the next UN ambassador.

Former Senator Jim Molan will also be vying for one of the seats, along with failed Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson.

At this stage, Mundine and Henderson are favourites to get the PM’s nod.

Mr Mundine tells John Stanley he’s got an enormous amount of respect for the retired major-general.

“Jim’s a great fellah. He’s an amazing person, he’s a person who’s served this country well and has done a great job.”

But he also says he needs a job and will be going for it.

“I’m looking at putting my hand up and we’ll see what happens when they announcements come out in the next few weeks.

“The first thing I’ve got to do at the moment is getting back to work and get an income coming in, otherwise the wife’s up me.”

Mr Mundine also commented on the Labor Party’s worsening position, saying it has got to get back to its base.

“This is what the problem is and this is why they’ve only won one majority government since 1993.

“When they talk about these listening tours, they’ve actually got to listen.

They’ve lost all that and they’ve been caught up in all this woke PC thing… I wish they’d woke up actually.

“All this crap that goes on about this stuff that doesn’t really mean anything.”
