A day in the life of legendary Winx trainer Chris Waller
All eyes are on champion mare Winx this weekend as she aims to equal Black Caviar’s record of 25 consecutive race wins.
She’ll line up in The Championships’ Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday hoping to further cement her place in racing immortality.
Her legendary trainer Chris Waller tells Ray Hadley his superstar mare is more than ready for the challenge.
“She’s never felt better. Under pressure, she just rises,” he says.
But what’s it like to train the world’s best racehorse, along with several hundred others?
Waller gives Ray an insight into what his day looks like… starting in the wee hours of the morning.
“It starts at 2:58am, the alarm goes off. I’m at work by 3:30, say good morning to all the staff.
“I want to be there when they’re there. They’re putting in the hard yards, 365 days a year.
“I turn my phone off at 6pm every night. I haven’t left a stone unturned. Then I’m ready to charge the next morning.”
The secret to his success? Never taking his foot off the gas.
“You don’t take your foot off the accelerator. I’ve got a good team around me and they drive me as well.”
For Waller, Winx is the icing on the cake and the hard yards are well worth it.
“I don’t think we’ve really understood just yet, how good she is. We’ve got a champion horse.”
