Construction companies would be forced to start work later in the day, if a Greens Councillor gets his way.

Jonathan Sri wants Brisbane City Council to toughen noise restrictions. It would mean construction could only begin from 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends.

He says the current rules don’t strike the right balance between the need for work and peace for residents.

Mr Sri tells Afternoons a number of noise complaints sparked his push.

“We get a lot of complaints about this,” he says.

“Basically we want what New South Wales has… Usually, construction can start at 7am on weekdays and 8am on Saturday.

“Whereas up here in Brisbane, construction can go six days, 6.30am to 6.30opm.”

In a statement to Macquarie Radio, Brisbane City Council says “it does not support the proposed changes”.

“Under State Government regulations building construction is not permitted between 6.30pm and 6.30am, or anytime on Sundays or public holidays.

These restrictions have been in place for many years and were determined through community consultation to protect residents from noise impacts.

Brisbane City Council does not support the proposed changes because of the impacts on construction jobs and housing affordability.”
