‘A lot of enquiries’: Overseas arrivals left confused by Queensland’s travel requirements

There are calls for uniformity around returning Australians flying from overseas back home, with states offering different quarantine and testing requirements.

There are also fears international airlines will move away from Brisbane, with the Queensland government yet to give a clear indication or modelling as to when the state will reach the 90 per cent vaccination milestone.

Hitting that milestone will mean arrivals won’t need to go into hotel quarantine.

CEO of the Brisbane Airport Corporation, Gert-Jan de Graaf, said the rules were confusing for travellers.

“We’ve got a lot of enquiries from people either willing to travel overseas and want to know even how they can get back, as well as from people living or spending time overseas that want to come back to Queensland and have no idea what the current requirements are but also how that’s changing for the better in the future,” he told Scott Emerson.

He said returning Australians and travellers were choosing Melbourne and Sydney over Brisbane.

He has called for “complete clarity” for airlines and travellers, including when they need a PCR test and other requirements.

“The market is there but it will take some time to get to where we were before,” he said.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport had 34 international airlines operating into Brisbane, now there’s only 11.
