‘Day of redemption’: Jeff Fenech handed fourth world title 30 years on
Jeff Fenech has described being awarded a fourth world title after the controversial draw in his 1991 fight against Azumah Nelson was overturned as a “day of redemption”.
Fenech dominated Nelson in their first fight in Las Vegas for the WBC super-featherweight title, but one judge scored the bout a draw and the other two were split.
The World Boxing Council made the decision to award the bout and belt to Fenech at the WBC convention in Acapulco, Mexico.
“It’s nice to finally get the recognition,” he told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports.
He said it was tough at the time, being robbed of the victory.
“I have watched it quite a few times, everybody talks to me about it, I’ve gone through it a few hundred times, maybe more.
‘”There’s never been a day I thought I lost more than two rounds … my opinion has never changed.”
He said it was a “day of redemption”.

Earlier today when the news broke, Psalty told 4BC Breakfast it was a long time coming.
“Everybody knew that was a rort,” he said. “Actually, it couldn’t have been a rort, it had to be incompetence or a combination of the two.
“It affected Jeff Fenech for a long time. He wasn’t the same after that, he lost that edge he had in the ring.”
