A decapitated koala and slaughtered border collie were among the bodies of almost 20 mutilated animals found in an inner-city park.

The gruesome dumping at Toowong’s Anzac Park also included a cat, possums and guinea pigs, some of which were found in plastic bags.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson has confirmed officers attended the park around 6.30pm Thursday and have referred the incident to the RSPCA.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner described the incident as “a sick act”.

“I’m saddened, disturbed and appalled at what’s occurred here,” he wrote in a social media post.

“It’s now a matter for Queensland Police, who I hope will find the culprits so our courts can deal with them.”

He said Council officers were first on the scene and have been offered counselling as a result of the horrific sight.
