‘A way for developers to cash in’: South Brisbane MP slams tower plan
The city skyline is set to reach new heights in a bid to cope with the rapidly growing population.
Brisbane City Council has announced a relaxation of height restrictions for the Kurilpa Precinct between South Brisbane and West End.
It gives residential developers the green light to build as high as the aviation safety limit, which is 274 metres or 90 storeys tall.
Amy MacMahon, the Member for South Brisbane, told Sofie Formica the announcement is “pretty shocking”.
“Dumping this on the community with no community consultation is really a reflection of this council and the state government’s approach to planning in general,” she said.
“This neighbourhood has borne the brunt of new development over the past decade already.
“It seems like yet again, Brisbane City Council is looking at a way for property developers to cash in on this neighbourhood.”

Griffith University researcher Paul Burton told Sofie Formica the location won’t be attractive to everyone.
“But if you’re younger people looking to buy or rent for the first time, go to university, get your first job, you want to be close to services, educational facilities, cultural facilities, then that becomes an attractive location that should be catered for.”
