ABC says ‘no more fat to cut’, hands out over $2 million in bonuses
The ABC has been questioning a freeze to their funding in the latest budget, saying there’s “no more fat to cut”.
It’s been revealed some of ABC’s highest paid staff, staff of a taxpayer-funded organisation, are receiving substantial bonuses.
Over $2.6 million in bonuses was dished out to employees, with nine of those bonuses worth over $50,000.
The company also spent over $10 million on market research and promotions.
Communications Minister Mitch Fifield says the ABC needs to justify the splash.
“It’s for them to explain and to justify the remuneration arrangement that they have.”
He says along with the budget’s annual indexation freeze to the public broadcaster’s funding, an efficiency review will also be conducted.
“What we can do… is have an efficiency review to shine a light, to show where it’s possible for the ABC to spend the taxpayer dollar in a better and more efficient way.”
