Queensland’s Roads Minister Mark Bailey unveiled plans to slash e-scooter footpath speeds to 12km/hr, as well as launching a new safety education campaign.

It’s hoped the raft of measures will keep pedestrians and riders safe.

4BC caller Helen’s son was in an accident with an e-scooter rider, around a month ago.

She said there was no warning and her son was in and out of hospital after the accident.

“My son ended up in hospital severe injuries,” she told Scott Emerson.

She said the crackdown was “fantastic, about time”.

Brendan Hemmings from the Brisbane Electric Scooter Association, which represents the personal operators, shared his reaction to the news.

“We think it’s great that we are now going to see the majority of scooter riders doing the 12km/hr speed.”

He said it will now be clear who is “flaunting the speed”, those on hire scooter or newer, less experienced riders.

“It’s going to be a lot easier to see where those areas the demographic of scooter riders are that need a bit more training or awareness.”
