The state opposition is accusing the government of conning Queenslanders over the building of a second M1.

It has been revealed the Coomera Connector will be four lanes, instead of six as originally promised.

But Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says the project is “future proof” and there is capacity to expand it.

He says the major road infrastructure will be welcomed by people in the northern Gold Coast area.

“They will have their own corridor with four extra lanes,” he told Scott Emerson.

He says the 16 kilometre stretch is designed for residents who are there now, but there is capacity for it to be expanded in the future.

“It is future proofed and designed for expansion to six lanes, as we get population growth, Scott.

“It’s a whole new corridor, it’s basically a whole new highway and this is the first stage, 16 kilometres from Carrara to Coomera.”

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli says an Infrastructure Australia report found the project was also well behind schedule.

He rubbished claims that it didn’t need to be six lanes.

“Has the demand lessened in the last 12 months? Because before the election there was demand,” he told Scott Emerson.

“I am calling absolute rubbish.”

He said the project has has also blown out from $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion.
