ACCC calling on health funds to be more consumer-friendly
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is calling on private health funds to make policies more transparent in its annual report into the sector.
Acting ACCC Chair Delia Rickard tells Ross Greenwood consumers need “clearer, simpler” policies which outline exactly what they will and won’t be covered for.
This comes after the report found consumer complaints about the sector increased by 30% in 2016-17.
She also says the affordability of insurance premiums is an ongoing problem within the sector, with Australians paying close to $23.1 billion in annual premiums in 2016-17.
“We’ve seen some minor changes and some improvements over time.
“But it’s indisputable that there is a real problem in terms of the affordability of private health insurance and people’s ability to understand what they’re paying for and to compare options.”
