Advocates for Julian Assange to put pressure on PM with Canberra rally
Supporters of Julian Assange will today gather in Canberra to pressure the Prime Minister into doing more to stop his extradition to the US.
The Wikileaks founder is currently in a London prison, fighting a transfer to the US to face espionage charges.
He’s appealed to the High Court in London to block his extradition to the US to face criminal charges.
Rally organiser Lorese Vera says Anthony Albanese was more outspoken on the issue before he became Prime Minister.
“What we need is for him to be released and for the world to realise, and governments to realise, he committed no crime,” she said.
“He exposed war crimes and corruption all over the world.”
The Prime Minister has said he doesn’t see the purpose of the “ongoing pursuit” of Assange but insists the government will deal with the matter through diplomatic channels.
