AFP launches next phase of Operation Ironside after ‘overwhelming’ success
The second phase of the Australian Federal Police’s Operation Ironside has launched today, with trans-national organised crime networks in the sights of the AFP.
Up to 160 targets around Australia have been identified.
In the first phase, the covert, AFP-led investigation led to 300 arrests across the country.
Australian Federal Police detective superintendent Kristy Scott said the results as part of the operation were “overwhelming”.
She said they were targeting trans-national serious organised crime groups including bikies, trusted insiders, Italian and Asian organised crime groups.
“I think there’s been significant impacts particularly to the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang,” she told Scott Emerson.
“It has now ensured that these organised crime groups have to second guess how they do their business and we continue to adapt and come up with innovative ways to make sure we are keeping one step ahead of them.”
