AFP on high alert as threats against MPs spike
Authorities are on high alert over an increased volume of threats against federal members of parliament.
A series of briefing papers prepared for the Albanese government show departments have noted an increase in threats, as well as harassing, nuisance and offensive behaviour.
In one such document, the AFP warns of an “increasingly complex criminal environment” and vows to brief the government further about necessary security responses.
AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw told Ray Hadley there are shared concerns around threats to federal MPs.
“We have seen a heightened degree of activity towards MPs and we’re constantly alert to that,” he said.
“We’ve been quite proactive in making sure we have the right security packages for each member of parliament and we’re constantly engaging with their offices, their electorates and so on.
“We also need information from the public around some of these radicalised individuals.”
