Alan Jones ‘fanboys’ over swimmer and Survivor Shane Gould
She could be the greatest swimmer the world has ever seen and now she’s winning over a new legion of fans.
Over recent months, Shane Gould has blazed her way back into the public eye as the oldest competitor on Channel 10’s Australian Survivor.
But she’s never left the memory of Alan Jones, since her nation-stopping efforts as a 15-year-old at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Alan vividly remembers setting his alarm to wake up in the middle of the night and watch her win three gold, one silver and one bronze medal from those games.
In the same year, she became the only swimmer in history to hold the 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 and the 200-metre individual medley world records, simultaneously!
“You can forget your Mark Spitzes of this world, you can forget your Phelpses of this world,” Alan says.
“This will never be repeated. This girl captured the imagination of Australia.”
A year later, Shane retired from swimming at the age of 16, saying it wasn’t fun anymore.
Now, the 61-year-old is winning over the country once again on Survivor, reaching the final four.
She tells Alan her experience in swimming was invaluable for the TV show.
“The things I brought to Survivor, and my experience of swimming, was that when you’re a swimmer you have to pay attention to the people around you.”
Shane tells Alan how she trained her body before heading onto the show and how her childhood in Fiji helped her outwit the other competitors.
