Albanese Government to change laws on casual employment

Article image for Albanese Government to change laws on casual employment

The Albanese Government is proposing to change laws surrounding the ability for casual employees to become permanent, sparking debate over its necessity.

The existing law provides casual employees who have worked consistent hours for a year the opportunity to convert to a permanent position.

Andrew McKellar, CEO of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told Peter Gleeson on 4BC Drive, that is unclear why the government is changing the law.

“Fundamentally, we’ve heard the unions talking about insecure employment, they’ve tried to characterise casual work as insecure work, but nothing could be further from the truth…” Mr. McKellar continued.
