Transport Minister joins calls for Redlands Mayor to resign
Transport Minister Mark Bailey has joined calls for the mayor of Redland City Council to resign today.
Karen Williams crashed her car into a tree on Thursday night, later admitting she had “several glasses of wine” and said she was deeply sorry for her actions and error in judgement.
Just hours beforehand, she had held a video meeting with families who have lost their loved ones to drink drivers.
Mr Bailey told Peter Fegan it was time for her to go.
“I think this case is a really clear case in a lack of responsibility from somebody who has put her own hand up to be a community leader as the Mayor, and here she is contradicting entirely her commitments,” he said on 4BC Drive.
The Minister echoed sentiments from the family of expectant mother Kate Leadbetter who also called the embattled Mayor to step down.
Ms Leadbetter was hit and killed with her partner Matthew Field after a stolen car driven by a drunk and drug affected teen crashed into them on Australia Day in 2021.
In recent weeks, the mayor had joined the families of the pair, calling for an appeal to the sentence handed to the teenager.
Today an emotional Danielle Leadbetter, Kate’s aunt, says she must do the right thing and stand down.
“I am not just angry, I am frustrated,” she told Mark Levy, filling in for Ray Hadley.
No charges have been laid.
