A war of words has erupted on 4BC Breakfast after Labor launched a cashless welfare ‘scare campaign’.

The first shots were fired when Bribie Island residents were handed pamphlets claiming the Coalition plans to expand its cashless welfare card to aged pensioners.

Minister For Families and Social Services Anne Ruston yesterday rubbished the claims, chalking them up to a “desperate scare campaign”.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese defended the claims and produced a quote by Minister Ruston as evidence for Neil Breen.

“Well, here’s what Anne Ruston said on February 1, 2020: ‘We’re seeking to put all income management onto the universal platform, which is the cashless debit card’,” he said this morning.

“They’re her words, Neil, not mine, her words.”

The comments weren’t missed by Ms Ruston’s office, which wasted no time clapping back at Mr Albanese in a text message sent to Breenie.
