Another protest staged by climate activist group Extinction Rebellion has caused traffic chaos in Brisbane’s CBD.
22-year-old midwife Sophie Thompson is in police custody after she suspended herself from a tripod in the middle of the Victoria Bridge at around 7.30am.
The stunt blocked traffic and pedestrian access to the bridge, causing huge delays for commuters.
While suspended over the Brisbane River, Ms Thompson clutched an umbrella with the words “Climate denial is child abuse”.
It took police over an hour to get her down and restore access to the bridge.
Traffic was brought to a standstill this morning when climate change protesters blocked a busy Brisbane bridge in both directions. Police have now reopened the bridge. #bnetraffic #7NEWS pic.twitter.com/KIT6cXN4KH

Police have had to remove several Extinction Rebellion protesters in recent months, with members of the group continuously blocking traffic by staging illegal protests and gluing themselves to roads.
Ray Hadley says it’s about time the government did more to punish offenders.
“The lunacy continues and they need to be tougher. They’ve got tougher but not tough enough.”
