Anthony Albanese sworn in as PM ahead of overseas trip
Anthony Albanese says he’s deeply honoured to serve as Australia’s 31st prime minister.
Mr Albanese has been sworn into the role this morning, along with four other MPs.
Penny Wong has been given the green light as new foreign minister.
The pair will travel to Japan to represent Australia at high-level security talks.
“I look forward to leading a government that makes Australians proud, a government that doesn’t seek to divide that doesn’t seek to have wedges but seeks to being people together for a common interest, a common purpose.”
In Queensland, the Greens are on track to claim Ryan and Brisbane, after securing Griffith.
Meanwhile, leaders from around the world have passed on their congratulations, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
It’s expected Peter Dutton will take over the Liberal leadership, although there are suggestions Karen Andrews or Dan Tehan could also throw their hat in the ring.
