Anthony Albanese: Why Scott Morrison’s ‘secret’ portfolios are a big deal
Anthony Albanese has accused Scott Morrison of “trashing” Australia’s democracy after secretly usurping five portfolios.
It was yesterday revealed the former prime minister covertly appointed himself minister of health, finance, home affairs, treasury and industry, science, energy and resources.
All but one of the ministers who already held the portfolios were left in the dark about the new arrangements.
As some Coalition members attempt to hose down anger, the Prime Minister has doubled down on the significance of the situation with a two-pronged argument.
Speaking with Laurel, Gary & Mark, he said it’s an issue of undermining parliamentary processes.
“This sort of centralisation of all power for one person is a trashing of the checks and balances that keep our democracy strong.”
Mr Morrison used his powers on one occasion to veto the then-resources minister, Keith Pitt, on the controversial Pep-11 gas project, which Mr Albanese says is an affront to parliamentary democracy.
Second, Mr Albanese said the secretive way in which Mr Morrison assumed extra powers sets a problematic example.
“Our democracy relies upon people being honest and transparent about what’s going on and people being accountable.
“That’s why this is such a shocking series of revelations.”
