Australia’s vaccine regulator will consider rolling out a fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose for under 65s.

Currently it’s only recommended for over 65s and those with significant health issues.

It comes as the country grapples with more infectious sub-variants and COVID-19 immunity waning through the winter months.

The eligibility was expanded back in May to include people with co-morbidities.

Director of infectious diseases at Mater Health Services, Associate Professor Paul Griffin, said while more effective vaccines are promised, the current wave is bringing a significant rises in case numbers.

“Personally I think we won’t have those in time to help us with this current wave which as I say is looking very significant, we are seeing really sharp increases in case numbers across the country,” he told 3AW radio.

“While ICUs aren’t filling up at this point in time, we are seeing a lot of people in hospital which is putting a big strain on our healthcare systems.”
